This is a book of photos and words, of themes and variations—circlestories inspired by the sights, sounds, and scents of the natural world, but it’s not a nature book. It’s a book of reflections about life as mostly-unknown territory, about how we know what we know, about how much remains unknown, and about how we find meaning both in our own personal lives and as part of a much larger web of life. Themes recur, in different contexts, in different lights, and the improvisations seem to go in circles (nowhere) but they are never quite the same (now here). Each improvisation is, to borrow David Campany’s words, a “light and point of view” that hopefully come together “to make visible the common poetry of fleeting transcendence.” The themes are drawn from the author’s forty-five years in practice as counselor and teacher, from the ideas of other thinkers and writers (such as D.H. Lawrence, Alan Watts, Ken Wilber, Mary Oliver, Pete Seeger, Donovan, Viktor Frankl, and Rebecca Solnit), as well as from more seasoned writings (such as Qoheleth, Lao Tsu, Horace , and Omar Khayyam). The truth is that the light and the point of view are ultimately the reader’s, and they have always been the reader’s, just carried along here for awhile. Images and writings that seem to talk to each other in some way are grouped together. The intention is for the photos and stories to stimulate thought, reflection, and mindful action, but certainly not on any particular path determined or dictated by the author. That said, the author does hope readers will be inspired to put on some good walking shoes, grab a sturdy hiking staff, and set off to explore some beckoning trails on their own treks to now here..1 Read more
